In the case of a newborn, he or she must be added to the policy, and you will undoubtedly be asked to complete paperwork to do so. This does not happen automatically. Usually insurance companies expect you to file the necessary paperwork within 30 days after birth.
There are many, many insurance plans and policies. They vary greatly in the coverages that are offered. We suggest that you call your benefit administrator at the employer where the insurance policy is offered to learn exactly what the benefits will be for your child.
Some of the things you will need to know are:
- Does the policy cover well-child physical examinations?
- Does the policy cover office calls for sick children?
- Are childhood immunizations a covered benefit and if so, is there an annual dollar limit on immunizations?
- Is there a co-pay for well-child visits?
- Is there a co-pay for sick visits?
- Is there a deductible and how much is it?
- Is there a dollar limit for well visits? Is there a visit limit annually?
It will be important for you to have the answers to these questions so that you understand what the childís benefits will be. If both parents have insurance coverage on the child, verify which policy is primary. You will be responsible for any co-pays, deductibles, and non-covered services. If after you have checked your policy with your insurance company and you have questions, please feel free to contact us. We will be happy to answer your questions or assist you in finding the answers.
